Let Him Who Boasts

Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,

but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me,

that I am the LORD who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth.

For in these things I delight, declares the LORD.”

Jeremiah 9:23-24

I read this passage this morning. It caused me to ask the question, “what am I boasting in?” Where am I taking confidence in life? Is it in those things which are fading and fleeting?

One’s wisdom may be fleeting- life is full of unexpected twists and turns we are often left bewildered. One’s might or strength is fleeting- you don’t stay young and strong forever. One’s riches may be fleeting – just look at the stock market.

We’re encouraged to take confidence and comfort in understanding and knowing the Lord. This implies knowing our theology- who God is- as well as cultivating our relationship with Him. The passage goes on to point us toward aspects of God’s character on which we should meditate and thus come to know Him better- His steadfast love, and His commitment to justice and righteousness. That’s the God who loves us and gave His Son for us.

This is a passage to turn into prayer by saying, “Lord, show me where my misplaced confidence is and cause me to take confidence in you. Help me to understand and to know you truly. I praise you that you are a God who shows committed, covenant love to Your people and You desire justice and righteousness. Help me to pursue those things as you give me grace and wisdom to do so. Thank you that in the gospel your love and justice come together in the work of your Son, the Lord Jesus.”
