Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things;
let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD.
Psalm 107:43 (ESV)
Dear HLPC family,
I’ve taken to reading a chapter out of Proverbs each day in an effort to gain wisdom. I’m thankful that the book of James tells us that God gives wisdom generously to those who ask Him. I’m convinced that most of the decisions we are called to make require godly wisdom, rooted in God’s revelation in the Bible, as opposed to “feeling peace” or trying to read cryptic signs in the events around us. The book of Proverbs has many nuggets of wise sayings.
Psalm 107:43 is a big help, too. It spells out the path of wisdom for us. If we want to be wise we should consider the steadfast love of the LORD. That is, we should ponder, we should seek to understand, God’s love- specifically His covenant, committed, steadfast love for His people.
How do we do this? We give thought to God’s character, His ways, and His promises made and kept in Jesus Christ. We think on Jesus as our Good Shepherd who lays down His life for us, His sheep. We think on His words that He is gentle and lowly in heart. We camp out in the reality that God IS love.
When we consider and ponder God’s love for us it should help us have love and patience with others. Loving others is hard sometimes. People disappoint us, even hurt us. Remembering the steadfast love of the Lord is a way for us to love others as we can give them a tiny glimpse of God’s love for us. We can apply this to marriage, parenting, and friendships.
Take some time and consider God’s covenant love on full display in the gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ. It’s the wise thing to do.
Your Pastor,
Paul
