Put Not Your Trust in Princes

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.

I Timothy 2:1-2

Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD his God,

Psalm 146:3-5

Dear HLPC family,

Finally, the election is behind us. I’m sure we had all grown weary of the barrage of ads, signs, and constant news about it wherever we turned. There was an underlying tension leading up to November 5th. This page in our nation’s history has been turned.

Two passages of Scripture, posted above, were coming to my mind as I reflected on events late into Tuesday night. According to I Timothy we are called to pray for our leaders. We pray for them so that life is ordered in such a way that we may live unhindered to the glory of God. Most, if not every Sunday, prayer for our leaders goes up from the HLPC pulpit. That should continue. We live in a fallen world with serious international and domestic issues. We need to pray for godly wisdom for our leaders to face these issues and that they will act in a way that honors God’s priorities reflected in Scripture.

Psalm 146 also reminds us that no human leader is made to shoulder all our trust and hopes. Our ultimate confidence is in the Lord our God, the One who made all things and who redeemed us through the work of His Son, Jesus Christ. We have in these two passages the right balance for us regarding living as a citizen of heaven while also being a citizen of this nation. Pray, live as salt and light, put your hope in your Savior.

One thing remains regardless of who occupies the White House: our community and our world needs the saving news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. May the Lord use HLPC to proclaim that good news to all who will listen and may He use us to make faithful disciples.

Your Pastor,

Paul
