Dear HLPC Family,
Each of us is constantly making decisions—big and small—that shape our lives: whether we’re choosing how to discipline a child, whether to change jobs, how to handle conflict in marriage, or how to steward our finances wisely, these moments demand more than just good information—they call for true wisdom. Behind every decision is something deeper: what kind of wisdom we’re relying on.
James reminds us that wisdom isn’t just about what we know; it’s about what our lives show. There is a kind of wisdom that looks impressive on the outside—clever, confident, and even spiritual—but James tells us it may actually be “earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.” In other words, not all that sounds wise is truly wise. True wisdom, by contrast, is “from above.” It’s marked by humility, peace, gentleness, mercy, and sincerity. This kind of wisdom isn’t driven by the need to win an argument, be seen as impressive, or protect one’s ego. It is rooted in a heart that has been shaped by the grace of God in Christ.
This week, I want to encourage you to pause and ask: Where am I drawing my wisdom from? What kind of fruit is my life producing? The good news is this—God delights to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5; Prov. 2:6). And in Jesus Christ, we have more than just the perfect example of wisdom—we have access to the One in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Even more, through Him, we come to know the love that surpasses knowledge and are filled with the fullness of God (Eph. 3:19).
And let’s fix our eyes on Jesus—the wisdom of God—who is not only our example, but our source, our strength, and our Savior.
In the grip of God’s grace,
Pastor Zach
